North American P-51 Mustang of the Swiss Air Force

Postwar-Years 1946 & 1947

The postwar-Years saw interesting activities related to the P-51 Mustang in Switzerland.

The Swiss Government repeatedly tried to acquire the P-51 Mustang from USAAF surplus stocks, but, at first, without much success. The general US opinion was, that the Swiss had showed too much support for Nazi-Germany. Back then, like today, it was forgotten that Switzerland was a neutral Country...

An occurrence in November 1946, however, changed the American attitude towards the Swiss, and opened the doors for negotiations to eventally purchase the P-51 Mustang:

The "Glacier Gooney" - The Crash of a Douglas C-53 'Skytrooper' in the Swiss mountainsand the successful rescue of the crew and passengers 

in November 1946, a Douglas C-53 'Skytrooper' operated by the EATS (European Air Transport Service) disappeared on a flight from Austria via France to Italy.
